Gerard Gallant, the consummate hockey coach

For today's blog, Ron Phillips, a New York, York native, writes about Gerard Gallant, coach of the Rangers.

Gerard Gallant has been the new coach of the New York Rangers since June 2o21. Gallant has been a success in his short time with the Rangers. The team he took over had a record of 10–10–1 and was coming off a miserable road trip. In his first 20 games as the Rangers' new coach, he improved their record to 15–9–1.

Gallant is from Summerside, Prince Edward Island in Canada. He played for the Summerside Crystals of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League (MJAHL) from 1981 to 1984. In Summerside, Gallant played with future NHLer Cam Russell, a defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche.

After playing in the MJAHL, Gallant played in the American Hockey League (AHL). He spent a year with the Fredericton Express and the Sherbrooke Jets. He played in the AHL for three teams the following year: Sherbrooke Canadiens, Moncton Hawks, and New Haven Nighthawks. In 1987, Gallant's playing career ended due to a neck injury.

Ron Phillips notes that Before joining the New York Rangers, Gallant served as head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights. He also led Team Canada to a gold medal win at the 2021 IIHF World Championship.

Gerard Gallant is now in his second year as coach of the Rangers. He is the 36th head coach in franchise history.
